Thames Water Supply Interruption: What It Means for Your Household
What happened
A large water main burst near the reservoirs in West Molesey on the morning of 28 September 2026, cutting off supply to households across parts of Surrey and south-west London, according to Thames Water's own statement reported by London Loves Business: “Our specialist team is now on site and working to stop the water flooding from the broken pipe. We’ve rerouted water around the area and customers in the Surbiton area should begin to see their water return shortly.” Elmbridge Borough Council confirmed on its own website that the disruption affected parts of Esher, Thames Ditton and Molesey, plus other parts of south-west London, and that supply had been restored to affected residents by Tuesday 29 September 2026.
Who is affected
London Loves Business reported the burst affected 18 postcodes spanning Kingston upon Thames, Merton, Richmond upon Thames, Sutton and Wandsworth in London, plus Elmbridge and Spelthorne in Surrey. Elmbridge Borough Council's own update named Esher, Thames Ditton and Molesey specifically. Two schools, Long Ditton Infant and Nursery School and Thames Ditton Infant School, were forced to close for the day as a result, per London Loves Business. Thames Water has not published an exact count of affected properties; that figure is not confirmed here.
What you can and can't do
Elmbridge Borough Council's update pointed residents to Thames Water's free Priority Services Register for anyone needing extra support during a supply interruption, and to Thames Water's own website and app for live outage updates. Thames Water has also directed customers to report ongoing problems directly through its website.
How long it's expected to last
The burst was first reported on the morning of 28 September 2026. Thames Water's same-day statement said customers in the Surbiton area should begin seeing water return “shortly” after crews rerouted supply, and Elmbridge Borough Council confirmed on 29 September 2026 that water supply had been restored to affected residents. Thames Water has not published an official incident closure notice beyond the council's update, so residents still experiencing problems should check Thames Water's own outage page.
Compensation
Compensation for unplanned water supply loss in England and Wales is set out in the industry-wide Guaranteed Standards Scheme (GSS): the Consumer Council for Water's own factsheet states customers are automatically entitled to a payment for the first 12 hours without water, and a further payment for each additional full 12 hours in England under standards updated on 1 October 2025 (each full 24 hours in Wales), with no need to contact the water company to claim it. Thames Water has not published a statement confirming GSS payments for this specific incident, so affected customers who believe they qualify should check Thames Water's own compensation page or contact Thames Water directly; this post does not state a specific amount because none has been officially confirmed for this event.
